You Don’t Own Me Through My Eyes

Lesley Gore “Lesley Sue Goldstine” was her real name and she had so many hits as a teenager, she recorded her version of It’s My Party with Quincy Jones in 1963, she was a junior in high school. It became a number-one. Followed by Judy’s Turn to Cry, She’s a Fool and You Don’t Own Me

You Don’t Own Me” is a popular song. This single was recorded by Lesley Gore when she was 17 years old in 1963. It was written by Philadelphia songwriters David White and John Madara. The song hit #2 on the Billboard Pop Singles Chart in the United States. It was #2 for three straight weeks during February 1964.

This song has stood the test of time, that’s an artist and song writers dream. This song has been a classic since I was born and I always was astonished by how it held up so well. There had been no one who could touch Lesley’s version. Till I heard the version by Grace for the Suicide Squad soundtrack. Since then there has been a few other big name artists that gave a crack at recording their own version. Madison Beer an artist I love so much has an amazing version as well.

Other singers have covered the song, like Dusty Springfield, Joan Jett and Grace Sewell, Kristin Chenoweth, Ariana Grande, Lauren Jauregui, Madison Beer and many more.

The song is about a woman telling her man he should never tell her what to do or what to say. The man should also not put her on display. It is considered to be a feminist anthem with a connection to the civil rights movement. Gore later worked as an actress and television personality. She composed songs with her brother, Michael Gore, for the 1980 film Fame, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. She hosted several editions of the LGBT-oriented public television show, In the Life, on American TV in the 2000s. She was a very special one of a kind woman. Hope you enjoy my mix-up of my favorite artists performing their versions of You Don’t Own Me.

I love music and it's lyrics, my song writing days are still in me. Just a little more poetic now.
